The question is: does it really help recovery?
Walk into Barry's, EPISOD or 1Rebel after class and you’ll see it —
a fuel bar ready to hand you a shake the second you finish training.
I LOVE it. Quick, tasty, feels like part of the experience.
But do these shakes actually help recovery, or are they just smart upselling? 👇
✅ Protein shakes: if you’re not hitting your protein goals through meals (and most people aren’t), they’re a convenient way to close the gap.
✅ Carbs post-workout: can help refill glycogen, especially after long or intense sessions (which these classes usually are).
🤔 Glucose spike: many gym shakes are loaded with sugar (even from natural fruits) --> giving you a quick boost but usually followed by a crash.
🤔 Real food vs liquid calories: science suggests whole foods are better, but convenience wins when you’re on the go.
So YES, I grab them, but I also know they’re not always the smartest recovery choice.
One trick I use: take them on the go and walk. Research shows even a 10-minute walk can help flatten the glucose spike.
What’s your favorite post-workout treat?
